Fast Paced- Fast Food (Chap 2)
In the American society the average person can only stay focused for 24 minutes at a time. Because of this our culture has turned into a very fast paced world and everyone is on the move. A direct result of this speed is that people are going and grabbing that quick bite to eat from fast food restaurants like McDonalds. In the USA alone, there are more than 13,000 McDonalds. On Manhattan, there are 11 separate locations, some only a matter of blocks apart. This fact makes the high calorie, fattening food that millions of people secretly love to gorge on a readily available food choice. Many locations staying open 24hours is also adding to the choice that many people take into consideration when they are going out for their late night meal. So the fast pace that many people are living in today is effecting the choice in food that they are choosing for their daily meals.

This blog drew up a lot of questions in my mind.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a reference to that 24 minute attention span report?
The US having 17,000+ McDonalds is also an interesting statistic. I spent much of my life in a town of 35,000+ people, and it had 2. I wonder how many McDonalds there are in comparison to how many people are in the US.
People put a lot of focus on McDonalds, and a lot of the blame. When people think of "fast food" McDonalds immediately comes to mind. Yet there are many fast food chains that contribute to obesity. I love how people hate McDonalds but have no qualms about Burger King or Jack in the Box.
ReplyDeleteNot only are people choosing to eat out more at places like Mickey D's, but they are also becoming complacent in their quest for fulfillment. People expect to be catered to, rather than go out and find what it is they want or need. So much for the hunter-gatherer...
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I do love my heart attach inducing, artery clogging, hip-butt-and-thigh-expanding Jack in a Box!
ReplyDeleteIt worries me the direction that our society is headed. I read a blog the other day that discussed a 6 billion dollar plan to make broadband accessible to everyone and to make it super super super fast. It really worries me when I see people freaking out because it takes two seconds to load a webpage instead of half of a second. I think it's amazing that we have so much information at our fingertips. The ability to hop online and Google anything and everything is wonderful in itself. Who really cares if you spend an extra two seconds waiting for the page to load? Is it really worth 6 billion dollars? What happens when we become too consumed in the go, go, go fast paced of society and forget about what really matters in life? We'll be one hot mess of impatient, unkind people.
